How do we celebrate? What role does food—especially cake—play in marking the moments that matter? For Issue II of Food & Feeling, we’re exploring Cake & Celebration—the traditions, the personal stories, the unexpected rituals, and the moments that might not involve cake at all.
We’re looking for submissions that are personal, thoughtful, and deeply connected to your lived experience. Maybe it’s a childhood memory of ice cream cake at a fast-food birthday party, the bittersweet taste of funeral cakes, or the simple joy of buying yourself a slice after a hard day. Celebration can be grand or intimate, traditional or unconventional. It can be messy, joyful, complicated—just like life itself.
We welcome a variety of submissions, including:
🍰 Personal essays, memoirs, poetry, and short stories
🍰 Cultural commentary and historical deep dives
🍰 Reviews of books, films, and media where cake & celebration play a role
🍰 Literary translations (with permission from the original author)
🍰 Interviews—especially with elders sharing their traditions
🍰 Recipes with a story—because food is memory, too
🍰 Visual art, comics, and photography that capture the essence of celebration
